Passive monitoring of 10 Gb/s lines with PC hardware
Passive network monitoring provides information about real network traffic, it is non-intrusive and it can run continuously and provide results at any time scale. On the other hand, it is compute-intensive, because we need to process large volumes of data in real time.
Typical speed of current backbone Internet lines is 10 Gb/s. In this paper we discuss whether such links can be monitor by a PC and describe results of our laboratory and real network observations. We identify which components can be bottlenecks under what conditions.
