European electronic identity: an overview of the state of play and of the remaining key challenges

In this presentation, Hans Graux will provide a short overview of the current state of play in European identity management policies in the public sector. The emphasis of the presentation will be on the fundamental choices that European countries are making with regard to reliability and usability, and on the importance of appropriate security and risk assessment. These policy choices can have a profound impact on the cross-border accessibility of existing and new applications, and thus on the development of new markets. The presentation will conclude with an overview of initiatives and challenges to be tackled at the European level in this field.
