eduroam in Portugal

Designed and launched in 2003 the e-U Virtual Campus initiative (www.e-u.pt) aimed at implementing wireless academic networks to provide easy access to contents and services by students, researchers and teachers, thus prompting computer and Internet usage. Currently, 51 of the 57 e-U higher education institutions, with about 307 000 students representing more than 82% of the Portuguese academic community, have wireless networks available on their campus.
Since its early stage e-U initiative stated mobility as a major goal therefore allowing that an e-U user could, without any effort, be connected in any university in the country. Portugal has soon started to be one important player in the Eduroam project (www.eduroam.org) which has the objective to interconnect countries mobility infrastructures, allowing and promoting international mobility of the academic community.
