The TF-ECS has been established to investigate synchronous enhanced communication and related services. It explores collaboration tools and technologies that go beyond traditional voice and video conferencing. The focus is on real-time communication (RTC) tools and protocols that include audio (VoIP and IP-Telephony), video, instant messaging, presence, collaborative applications & desktop sharing and related media. F-ECS coordinates current national activities and assist in the rollout of next-generation collaboration services. The 9th TF-ECS Meeting will be held during the TNC2008. Beside the plenary a demonstration on the server (called NRENhanced Communications Server) image installation and configuration will also be performed.

Workshop: "Challenges in Network Control and Service Planes"

This workshop will discuss architectural solutions for network and IT service integration over high-speed network infrastructure. In particular, the workshop will present various implementations of network control and service plane architectures to support the emerging infrastructure-as-a-service model. The main goal is to share the collective experiences gained by major research projects and initiatives around the globe and explore common vision, outcomes and synergies.

What are the requirements and use-cases for extending federated authentication and authorisation to other types of applications and services?Many NRENs have deployed - or are in the process of deploying - national education and research federations. These are generally intended to deliver a flexible and powerful authentication and authorisation infrastructure (AAI) for use with Web-based resources only. This infrastructure is typically SAML-based. There is increasing interest in using this infrastructure, alongside other widely-deployed security frameworks such as TLS, RADIUS and Kerberos.

This BoF will:

  • highlight the existing authentication and authorisation frameworks and proposals for interoperation between security frameworks;
  • identify use-cases whose authentication and/or authorisation capabilities could be improved through improving inter-operability;
  • attempt to understand the similarities and differences between these use-cases in order to understand how better interoperation might be achieved.

BoF: DoyoutubeUtoo?

Date:                   Tuesday 20 May
Time:                   18:00 – 20:00
Venue:                Room Moazrt, ‘Oud Sint-Jan’ Conference Centre

The BoF is about video platforms and video repositories. Many universities are about to build solutions for recording lectures and conferences and store them in a video archive. The main idea behind this is to build a federated system, where metadatas are exchanged in order to find lectures from other universities. This means that someone in France can find and watch a lecture in Germany. The title provokes thinking of a sort of youtube for universities with educational content. An iTunes for universities exist already (iTunesU).

The BoF will:

  • gather information about existing activities and deployments
  • identify possible cooperations areas between NRENs and universities
  • attempt to understand the end users needs

BoF: Opportunities in Euro-Asian collaboration
Date:                   Tuesday 20 May
Time:                   18:00 – 20:00
Venue:                Room Beethoven, ‘Oud Sint-Jan’ Conference Centre

The main objective of this BoF is to draw the attention of European members to an opportunity to exchange information and ideas, strengthen their collaborations with their Asian partners, or to explore new initiatives or applications on the high speed network which would be beneficial to both Europe and Asia.

Some Euro-Asian collaboration and new initiatives in tele-medicine and tele-education will be discussed and introduced. Possibilities to further extend activities in reaching out to a wider European membership will be the subject of discussions in this BoF.
