Optical networking for mainstream research and education networks

In this talk, we provide an overview of the ongoing efforts by SURFnet, the NREN (National Research and Education Network) in the Netherlands, on hybrid network architectures for IP services and lightpaths for research applications. By end of 2005, SURFnet6 was the world’s first countrywide fully operational hybrid network. The interest in lightpaths has been such that the network capacity that was originally planned for 2008 was already in use at the end of 2006. Tens of lightpaths were installed on SURFnet6 and a total of 25 OPNs (Optical Private Networks) was realised during the course of 2006 and 2007.
